Rob Scharein

Rob is the leader of the visualization sub-group within CoLab/CECM. His background is multidisciplinary, with a BSc in Physics (1981), an MSc in Astronomy (1985) and a PhD in Computer Science (1998). Rob's main interests are in developing mathematical and scientific visualization software. For his PhD, he developed KnotPlot, a computer program for drawing, visualizing, manipulating, and energy minimizing knots. The software is widely used in the knot theory community, as well as by knot enthusiasts and others who appreciate the visual nature of the mathematics.

For the CoLab project, he will be integrating a number of mathematical software tools so that they work together better, and in an interactive shared environment. Included in this will be a new version of KnotPlot, called coKnotPlot, which will permit knot theorists to do long-distance collaborative work over the internet.
